Macrobiotics is an Eastern philosophy known best in the Western world through its dietary principles of a low-fat, high fiber diet based on whole foods. The macrobiotic diet offers a way to achieve a fuller sense of balance both within ourselves and with the world around us, by synchronizing our eating habits with the cycles of nature. The principles include: eating seasonal foods indigenous to our immediate environment (as those foods are products of the local climate that supports the body‘s need for that environment), balancing the contractive and expansive qualities of foods, balancing proportions of different food categories, and taking into consideration of such factors as one’s age, lifestyle and psychological make-up in choosing food most appropriate to individual needs. The macrobiotic diet has been effective when applied to a wide variety of conditions.
